My Achy "Brachy" Heart

In a few weeks we will start on a short, however, difficult journey with miss Addyson. When she was 2 months old we discovered she had a condition called torticollis. Basically, she had stiff neck muscles. Whenever she was in the womb her head was positioned facing her right, and therefore when she was born she continued to always look in that direction. We promptly began therapy and started doing exercises with her at home to help correct and strengthen her neck muscles. It was there that our physical therapist mentioned that she had a bit of plagiocephaly as well. In a nut shell, plagiocephaly is a flattening on one or more sides of the head. Because of the encouragement to put babies to sleep on their backs to reduce the risk of SIDS, my Addy-girl was beginning to develop a flat spot on the back of her head. Even worse, because of her torticollis she was always on her back with her head turned to the right, which was making her flatter on the right side of her head. Our pediatrician said that a lot of times babies heads will round out on their own, but if not she could require a helmet to help shape her skull.
Sleeping baby, turned to the right :(

I immediately began doing everything I could to keep my sweet girl off the back of her head and get her looking left. I put her on her stomach for naps (but we all know how nap time goes in this house), I quit taking morning walks so that she wouldn't be in her stroller, I quit putting her in her swing, and I even made my own little donut shaped pillow so if I had to put her down her head wouldn't be directly on the ground. I carried that baby around all day long so she wouldn't be on her back. But it wasn't enough.
Sleeping in her carseat...turned to the right

We went for her 6 month check-up last month and the doctor recommended a helmet. He said even though she's a girl and her hair will probably cover up the shape of her head when she's older, it can still affect how glasses will sit on her face, can cause TMJ or jaw misalignment, and even the way a regular sports or bike helmet will fit her head in the future. He wrote us a prescription and we were off to the "helmet specialists".

Last week we visited two places to get an evaluation for Addyson's plagiocephaly. They did scans of her head so we could get a true look at her skull shape and see the extent of the flat spots. We learned that she technically has what's called brachycephaly, which is the combination of a flat spot in the back and side of the head. Depending on how well her skull adapts to the helmet, she will have to wear it for 2-3 months for 23 hours a day :( We get to take it off for bath time and that's it! We will go in once a week to have adjustments made to the helmet and see her progress. Hopefully within the next few weeks we will have her helmet, and the sooner she gets it on, the sooner she gets to take it off!
Here is a front shot where you can really tell her torticollis causes her to be tighter on the right side. You can also see the left side of her skull protrudes more than the right.
Here is a side shot where you can see the flatness of the back of her skull. It has also caused her forehead to protrude slightly in the front.
This is the view from the top of her head where you can really see the left side protruding further than the right.

God is so good for blessing us with such a beautiful and healthy girl! We are so lucky that this has been our only bump in the road so far, and I know these next few months will fly by!!!

Fast Fix

I don't know how many of you have been to Home Depot recently and looked for door handles, but they're expensive!! Ryan and I will be putting our house on the market at the beginning of next year so we've been making tiny changes here and there to update our house a little, and one of the things that needed to go were the door knobs. Our house was built with the cheap-o, bottom of the line, 80's looking brass door knobs and they're hideous. So we started a while back buying one or two door handles each month to enhance our little home, but after a while we forgot about it and quit buying them. Well last month I stumbled upon a wonderful little blog thanks to Pinterest that suggested just spray painting ugly brass door knobs. Uhm duh. Why did I never think of that?

So this weekend I set my mind to doing away with all things brass. We went to Home Depot and bought Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint.

Next I removed all of the ugliness from our doors. The only tool I needed was a Phillips head screw driver, and my hands...I actually did this one at a time because I didn't want to mix up any of the door knobs or screws!

Then I got to spray painting. Easy breezy.

Left them out to dry all afternoon and viola!

I'm pretty happy with how they turned out! The pictures don't do them justice but there are tiny little specks of bronze that add a nice shimmer to them.

God is so good for blessing with with a beautiful home!

WILW

Sorry it's been a whole week since I've posted! I know you've missed me right? All 4 of you... Well here is what I'm loving this Wednesday!

Dollar store mini containers!!! I lead a sad sad life. But the truth is I went to the dollar store to get an ice cube tray so that I could make larger batches of food for Addy and freeze them. Would you believe they didn't have any ice cube trays?!? Crazy I know, but they had these little gems and they've just made me so excited!! They were in packs of 8 for only, you guessed it, $1. So I bought 2 packs, go big or go home right? The other thing is when I'm done needing them for baby food I know Addyson will have fun playing with them. Just stacking them, or taking the lids off and on, and I'm sure she'll find plenty of things to hide in them and store away where ill never find them again.
Perfect for serving carrots

Pork Chop! This is Addy's new BlaBla piggy doll thanks to Debs! I have seen tons of kids with these little stuffed guys and wanted one for Addyson, so of course her Debs went right online and bought her one. She's not going to be spoiled or anything... Pork Chop is so soft and cuddly and her legs and arms are a perfect fit in my little teething baby's mouth. Sophie may have some competition!

Caramel Dip! Yummmm. Nothing says fall like apples and caramel. Perfect combination. I had plenty of "real" caramel dipped apples when I was a kid, but now that I'm a big kid having the dip in the cup is so much easier (and cleaner). Apples dipped in carmel are my fav, but I like to try branching out a bit because you can dip anything! I like to dip cinnamon graham crackers, popcorn, or even potato chips for a yummy salty/sweet combo! Hi, I'm fat.
Breakfast of champions

Hot water!!! Scratch that and change it to my hubby and my daddy for getting us hot water again! All day Saturday I noticed our water wasn't getting very hot but didn't think too much about it as I went on with my day. I mentioned it to Ryan when he got home so he went to check our hot water heater, and sure enough it was dead as a door nail. Oh joy because we had really been wanting to spend $500 on something. Ryan spent all afternoon Sunday going to Home Depot and Lowes to buy us a new hot water heater. Then my sweet daddy drove an hour to our house to help Ryan install it so that baby girl could have a warm bath that night! I'm always so thankful for the two most important men in my life!!
I didn't take a picture of them working on the HWH, so this one will have to suffice ;)
Who doesn't love a Snuggie?

As always, God is so good for blessing me with so many little things in life to be thankful for!

We Made It To 6 Months!!!

Can NOT believe that my munchkin is 6 months old already!!! Crazzzzay! She has changed so much in her short lifetime, and I have to say I'm really enjoying my big girl! She is so much fun to play with now! Here are the stats on my half-year old:

We had her 6 month well baby check up this morning and miss Addyson weighed in at 13lbs and 7oz, 9th percentile and 26.5 inches, 76th percentile. Every time we're there our doctor just says "long and lean, long and lean. That's good." Haha. Unfortunately baby girl started running a 100.3* fever this afternoon, but mommy's got the best medicine to fight that fever! We are officially in 6 month onesies and jammies. We've still been using a few 3mo dresses for church and just throwing some leggings on underneath :) She's still precious!

Sleep is getting better. The nap that she had mastered a few weeks back has since come and gone. No clue what happened because I still do everything the same but oh we'll, I'm used to no naps by now. We finally have a routine down for an earlier bed time and I am loving it!! For about two weeks she started waking up just about every two hours, and I was exhausted to say the least. It got pretty ridiculous when she woke up 6 times in one night and I decided I HAD to change something! So change we did and it has worked wonderfully! She's asleep by 7 so Ryan and I get to have a quiet dinner together and enjoy some down time. She still wakes up twice a night but I can handle that! I kept a record of our night routines just in case I ever stumbled upon a schedule that seemed to work and this is what our last night before the change up looked like:
Yes, she fell asleep at 5:45 and was awake again at 5:55!!! (And yes I would nurse her back to sleep. Bad, bad I know but there was no way I could get up and rock or walk her around that many times!)
She does sleep sometimes...

She still eats about 4-6oz each feeding but is a maniac when you try to give her a bottle. I hear stories every time I pick her up at church about who got into the bottle battle with her that day. She definitely prefers her mommy. She is still a wonderful little eater when it comes to her solids too. Since last months we've added carrots, green beans, sweet potatoes, pears and bananas to her menu. Last night she finished her "cup" of food and was still hungry so I heated up another cup and she gobbled that one down too! Apparently I'm going to have to start making bigger servings!
Fresh sweet potatoes!

As you already know she started sitting up this month!! It's so much fun to watch her learn new things! And now she has already set her mind to crawling!! It's so cute to watch her up on all fours rocking back and forth. She knows to move her legs but she hasn't quite figured out that her arms have to move too. It won't be long though...

She also likes to plank :)

She still loves both her puppies very much! Maggie is her favorite to watch run and play and she always makes her laugh. But Ranger is her favorite to pet because, we'll he's actually calm enough to sit and let her pet him! And of course there's every baby's favorite, Sophie. She still doesn't haven't any teeth but Sophie is still yummy to chew on.
Sneaking up on Ranger

God is so good for giving me such a happy healthy baby girl!

The Happiest Day Of My Life

Pretty much the main reason I started this blog was to have a way to remember anything and everything I could about my little girl who changes every day. I said when I started that I wish I had began blogging a loooong time ago, but since I didn't I'm going to use today to back track a bit. One of the days that I want to remember all the details of is the day I had my sweet angel. And since I didn't have a blog to write about it then I'm going to do it now, two days before her 6 month birthday! (Beware its sort of long!)

April 9th was just like any other day with the exception of my 39 week check up that was scheduled for that afternoon. That morning Ryan directed traffic and then went to workout while I did some laundry and wrote out my grocery list so we could get groceries after our appointment. Before we left I stood in front of our fireplace for my weekly "bump" picture where Ryan then asked if I thought we should take our hospital bags with us. I told him to not worry about it because I wasn't having any contractions and I felt fine. Besides we only lived 20 minutes away so we would have plenty of time to go back home if we needed. Ha.
Big Ol Belly

At 2:00 I had my doctors appointment. After being checked Dr. Sims said I was 5cm dilated and 90% effaced. He then looked at us and said (yes I remember this part verbatim) "I don't see any reason to send you home today. If your water were to break I don't think you would make it to the hospital in time." Uhmmmm, come again? Hospital now? Baby today? Totally should have brought our bags. Smh. As we got ready to leave Dr. Sims office he said he would call over to the hospital and let them know we were coming, because they were busy that morning so hopefully they could get me in. Little did we know how really busy they were!

We walked out the door and just looked at each other like "Holy moly this is really happening." So, first order of business; call the moms! I told my mom to not rush because I wasn't even in active labor, but I heard through the grapevine that she was a crazy lady. And Ryan's mom already had her bags packed and in her trunk with the route to the hospital in her GPS a month in advance! Smart woman. We headed over to the hospital and once we got there the man at the front desk looked as if we couldn't have come at a worse time. He told us that there were no rooms and not even any beds available so because I wasn't having contractions I would have to wait...in the waiting room. Well I guess that's what it's there for! Unfortunately there wasn't even room in the waiting room either! The nurse had to kick somebody out of a recliner so I could sit down, and Ryan had to stand beside me lol. That's when we decided that he should run home and get our bags, take care of Maggie, and do all the last minute things we thought we would've been able to do that afternoon. After about an hour Ryan finally made it back, but I was still in the waiting room. We texted everyone and told them to to slow their roll because I wasn't even in a bed yet. We just kept joking to ourselves that there was no room in the inn :)

My sweet daddy showed up first because he was already in Fort Worth on business. Then came our friends the Sellari's who were also in the area. Everyone else trickled in soon after. Somewhere between 5:00-6:00 a nurse finally came and got me. Unfortunately they still didn't have any rooms open, but they were going to put me in a bed where the post c-section mommies were. At least we had some privacy with our little curtain, but I could only have a few people back at a time. The nurses got me all hooked up to start monitoring me and the baby. With the big band around my big belly I was able to see my contractions on the computer screen, but I still wasn't feeling anything. I had planned all along to go as long as possible without having an epidural, and after seeing some big "contractions" on the screen I was pretty confident that I could totally do this! I was feeling tiny little discomforts here and there and when the screen showed a "big" one, it made me wonder what all these women had been complaining about. Oh how naive I was. My doctor came in that evening to check for any progress and then gave us a game plan; If real contractions didn't start on their own we would begin pitocin at 4am. Deal.
Waiting behind our curtain

Finally around 10pm we got a room!!! Just in time for the Rangers game to be over :( Oh well at least they won! By this time most everyone had taken off to get some rest since we obviously weren't going to have a baby any time soon. Ryan and I settled in to our comfy hospital beds and tried to get some rest. He of course went straight to sleep but there was no way I was going to be able to calm my mind down enough to sleep. Not to mention that every time I moved the big belly band would lose the baby's heartbeat and the nurse would have to come in and re-situate the whole thing. Most uncomfortable night of my life.
With Lauren, finally in a room!

Eventually 4am rolled around and it was time to start the pitocin. I was pretty nervous about this because all I had heard was that once it gets to working, my contractions were going to really kick in. They started the pitocin around 4:15 and came back every 30 minutes to up the dosage. Oh joy. But to my surprise I still didn't feel a thing. Every hour I kept waiting for it to get worse and nothing happened. After 3 hours of nothing Dr. Sims decided to just break my water.

All of our family had come back to the hospital but decide to go get some breakfast since I wasn't really making any progress. All except for sweet little Ali who decided to hang out with me because she was going to have to leave for work. (Yes, Ali came the night before, drove 30 minutes home to sleep, woke up and came back to see me before she had to go to work- now that's a real friend!) Anyways, at 7:15 they kick her out for a minute to break my water. And that's when I had my first real contraction. I immediately realized this was not going to be as easy as I had thought. Ali came back in and was shootin' the breeze with Ryan, while he played on the computer and while I tried to keep my mind off the sharp knives that had started slicing down my back and across my stomach. After about 5 minutes of contractions extreme nausea set in, and it set in quickly. Luckily the nurse was still in the room to get me a bag, otherwise we would've had a different mess to clean up. As I sat in bed throwing up my contractions were getting worse and worse and I soon realized that I was going to want that epidural. These contractions were no joke. Fun time was over. This hurt! I tried to keep talking to Ali in between dry heaving and saying "ow, ow, ow" but I don't think I was providing the best conversation.
"Waiting we are. We are waiting."

About 15 minutes later the anesthesiologist was sent down from heaven with what was sure to be the best medicine I've ever had! He started telling me his name and what the process would be and what the scientific name of the medicines were and what plant they come from in Indonesia, and all I could think was "I don't care if you have to stab me in the eye with this needle, let's just get it going!!!" He told me to sit up on the bed leaning my legs over the side and hunch my back a little. The second I did I had a contraction, but not like the other contractions, like I need to push kind of contraction. I felt like if I didn't push I was going to explode. And then I could feel that I was sitting on my baby's head!!

All I remember saying was " I have to push, I'm on her head!?!" The nurse took a quick peek and then confirmed what I already knew, "yep you're about to have a baby!" She immediately threw it into high gear telling the anesthetist to get out, had the observing student nurse (yes there was an extra set of eyes in the room just to observe my "misery") move tables into place and get out tools :/, and then she leaned over me to press the emergency call button from my bed and frantically told the front desk to page Dr. Sims and "get him here now!" Everything was happening so quickly all around me. Then it suddenly dawned on me, I didn't get my epidural! I have to do this the hard way. This is going to be bad. And it was. While I was pregnant I watched plenty of episodes of A Baby Story and Baby's First Day, and each time I saw one of those women moaning and groaning and crying out in pain I always thought to myself "oh be quiet it can't be that bad." But it really is that bad. And then I became one of those women that screamed. Sooooo embarrassing. But it hurt so bad that I couldn't even manage to cry. I can remember thinking I should have tears right now but nothing was coming out! Then I looked up and Ryan was crying for me. I could tell in his eyes that he didn't like seeing me hurting. Bless his little heart.

Neither of us can remember how many pushes it took to get her out, but I do know that I asked if she was out after every single push, lol. And then I heard the sweetest cry of my life and I saw her. Absolutely THE most gorgeous little face I had ever seen. Perfect in every single way. No more screaming. All I could say was thank you Jesus! At 7:57am (a mere 42 minutes after my first contraction) I had my 6 lbs 14 oz, 19 1/2 inch long beautiful girl. She looked exactly the way I had pictured her in my head. Yes even with all that black hair! Perfect. Just perfect.

And now I sit here rocking my 14 lb., 23 inch, almost 6 month old beautiful girl to sleep. Where has the time gone? I have cherished every single breath this sweet angel has taken and fallen even more in love with her with each passing day. Watching her grow and learn every day has been the most rewarding experience of my life, but it also makes me so sad that I will never get these days again. One day she will be too big for me to carry on my hip, too big to pick up when she cries, and too big to rock to sleep. So I'm going to do it all for as long as I can and pray the time doesn't slip away from me too quickly.

Throwback Thursday-Aarin Edition

Since we had National Sibling Day last week, I thought I would use this Throwback Thursday to talk about my sissy!!

I came into this world to brighten Aarin's life (yeah right) when she was just about to be 4 years old. I loved my big sissy so much that I had to sleep in the same bed with her for years! Which I'm sure we're the happiest years of her life :)

I've learned so much from her, like the importance of 80's flower bangs

And how to properly tuck my Nike t-shirts into my Umbro shorts.

And of course the best part about Christmas: Christmas eve pajamas and pictures

But most importantly I've learned how much better life is when you have an amazingly beautiful sister and friend to look up to. And of course she's the best aunt "in da weeeerld"!

God is so good for blessing me with the most amazing sister!! Love you sissy :)

Sittin' Tall

Someone is finally sitting up on her own!!! We've been working on it for a while but she seems to be getting the hang of it now!
Chunky Monkey

She has learned to put her hands out to catch herself when she falls to the side, but we're still working on the falling backwards part. She hasn't quite figured out how to use those little abs to pull herself forward.

Such a big girl!

I'm so excited to have a "sitter". No more lugging around that huge car seat into restaurants and stores. Now I can tote her around anywhere and set her in the shopping cart at Target and a high chair at...well we never eat out, but if we do she can sit in a high chair!! And she can sit on the "big girl" side of her bathtub!
Sorry so blurry :/

God is so good for blessing Addyson with working arms and legs and the cutest bunbuns ever to help her sit up!!
